Benzoin is a gum derived from the Styrax tonkinensis trees that grow in the northern provinces of Laos, in association with rain-fed rice cultivation. They are also grown in Vietnam. Incisions for extracting the resin are made in the bark of the trees from April to July, and the benzoin gum is harvested over the following winter months.
