The poplar is a fast-growing tree native to Europe. The black poplar grows mainly in low-lying areas and in moist soil. The tree is cultivated mainly for its wood, which is used in crate manufacturing. Harvested in the winter, the buds are also used for medicinal purposes. The scales that protect the buds contain a balsamic resinous substance.
