Originally from the Caucasus and Iran, Rosa centifolia appeared at the end of the 16th century following a mutation of Rosa gallica. It then spread to France, around the region of Grasse, where it was cultivated for its exceptional essence. Along with Rosa damascena, it is one of only two botanical varieties of roses grown for the perfume industry. Although the Centifolia Rose is an emblematic raw material of the Grasse region, for which it has made a worldwide reputation, its main area of cultivation today is in Morocco.
